The
Adapted Physical Activity Lab is a multipurpose research, teaching,
and service facility. Research conducted in conjunction with the
lab includes (a) identifying and analyzing sport performance techniques
used by elite athletes with disabilities in order to generate a
knowledge base for developing teaching and coaching techniques,
and (b) identifying and analyzing emerging locomotor patterns of
infants and toddlers with Down Syndrome in order to develop early
intervention techniques for potentially accelerating their motor
development.
Teaching is a vital part of the Adapted Physical Activity Lab.
Exercise and sport opportunities are available for TCU students
with disabilities who seek instruction on an individual basis or
need modifications in their traditional physical activity class
settings. Graduate and undergraduate kinesiology students are actively
involved in this process as a part of their practicum or internship
requirements.
The service component of the lab is primarily through the Saturday
Adapted Physical Activity Clinic, now in its 15th year at TCU. Participation
in the clinic provides (a) an important service-learning component
to the kinesiology and special education majors enrolled in adapted
physical activity classes as a part of their degree plan; and (b)
an opportunity for children and youth with disabilities to participate
in an activity based extracurricular activity focusing on development
of aquatics, motor, fitness, and game skills.
The Adapted Physical Activity Lab is equipped with the video-based
Peak Performance Motion Analysis System for biomechanical analyses
of elite and developmental patterns of movement. The lab also houses
several types of adapted sports, aquatics, and exercise equipment.
The equipment is available for use by individuals with disabilities
as well as for demonstration to our majors who will be future professionals
in activity-based settings.
